IFLA Eastern Region Award for Excellence

Background
At the IFLA Eastern Regional Congress held in Riga, Latvia (October 2002), it was agreed to begin an annual award for excellence in the
practice of landscape architecture within the region. Entries will be
evaluated by a representative jury and will be published for
distribution through association and universities. IFLA ER Council
meeting held during the IFLA World Congress at Calgary, Canada (May
2003) decided the details.
Objectives
- To encourage and recognize best quality landscape works in IFLA ER member countries
- To enhance the recognition of the landscape profession and the
practice of landscape architecture within the region
- To contribute to the design, conservation, and management of
the environment
Nomination
- This award is for projects of public or private nature that
achieve significant benefits or enhancement of the quality of the
environment. Nominations must be of landscape projects that have been
constructed or implemented during the last three years (2000, 2001 or
2002) in a member country.
- Member associations may nominate up to three entries and send
them to IFLA Eastern Region Secretary before September 30, 2003.
Awards
Three categories of award will be presented:
- IFLA Eastern Region President's award
- Awards of excellence: several projects
- Merit awards: at least one for each country
Submission Requirements
- Maximum 3 pages of A3 size drawings, maximum 10 pages of A4
size texts, and additional up to 4 pages of photos for each entry. The
submission should address the assessment criteria below.
- A separate sheet of introduction (maximum 300 words) and photo
of landscape architect(s) (or company), and address, phone number, and
e-mail address for contact.
- Legends, captions and all other text shall be in English.
- Photo and picture files should be min. 300 dpi and 10 cm wide,
in jpeg or tiff format.
- Text should be a MS Word file, Arial font Point 10.
- In addition to five hard copies, all of the files should be
copied onto CD-ROM.
Assessment Criteria
- Contextual relationship to nearby areas, heritage, natural,
cultural, infrastructure and services, access and circulation and how
the planning/design has responded to these.
- Sustainability objectives and intentions/achievements - eg
issues of sun, wind, rain, biodiversity, reuse and recycle of resources.
- Economic objectives and intentions/achievements - what was the
progression of project cost analysis, what management practices did the
planning/design professional employ to achieve cost effectiveness, did
these meet the clients needs?
- Establishment of the brief and the success of the
planning/design in meeting the needs - eg was the brief established by
design, by preparation of a feasibility study, or community survey or
other? Does the brief meet the needs of the client and the users?
- Expression of the concept - How were the planner's/designer's
philosophies and understanding of what was required expressed in the
project? How fully is the concept followed through using detail, color,
materials, siting of facilities? How successful was the planner/designer
in satisfying his/her aims for aesthetic expression.
- Innovation - What features/ideas/methods are expressed in the
project as contributing to innovation in landscape planning/design.
- User and Client Satisfaction - What assessment has been made
by the principal consultant in regard to this satisfaction? What
relationship exists between design consultant, client and user after
construction? Has a Post Occupancy Evaluation been considered / undertaken? What has been the community reaction to the project?
- Improvement to the environment - demonstrated community benefit through this planning/design intervention?
Judges
Entries will be assessed by a representative jury comprising:
- At least 3 IFLA Eastern Region delegates determined by the
IFLA ER Executive Committee
- The IFLA Eastern Region Secretary
- An external advisor who is an eminent practicing Landscape Architect within the Eastern Region determined by the IFLA ER Executive Committee
Rules
- All decisions of the jury are final.
- Entries will not be returned to the authors.
- IFLA ER retains the right of duplication and publication of the material submitted.
Important Dates
Call for entries: June 2003
Submission of entries: September 30, 2003
Jury: November 2003 - February 2004
Announcement of the awards: April 2004
